Are the Cleveland Browns Progressing or Regressing?

I think a fair comparison can be made to the NBA draft in some ways. Yes, they are different sports but there are two rounds of a draft for twelve active players in a game for the NBA equaling a 16.7% roster spot if they were to keep two picks active. In the NFL there are seven rounds with 46 players active on Sunday for 15.2% of the roster.

A player taken in the first round in the NBA should probably start which would be close to equivalent for a NFL player in the first three rounds while the second round pick and day three picks would be backups. With the numbers being comparable from this aspect, how many NBA teams do you see rebuilding trade out of a top lottery pick to gain more picks? Very few if you ask me. Just look at the Cavs.

They drafted Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Dion Waiters, Anthony Bennett, and Andrew Wiggins during their rebuild. They got quality players that were attractive to play with while they sucked so that all it took was a LeBron James to come in and put everything over the edge to three straight championship appearances. That leads to my question of why do the Browns continue to do it?

They continue to pass up players high to gain more and more assets that they are not even using because it keeps getting pushed off to the future. At some point the rebuild has to stop and talent needs to come in. Corey Coleman has not stayed healthy and Peppers might as well play on the moon with how they are using him.

Because of that the front office is also going to be compared with how the players they passed up fare. In his first season, Brown moved out of the second pick and taking either Carson Wentz, Jalen Ramsey, or Joey Bosa and moved back to the eighth pick.

All three can be on their way to the Pro Bowl this year. After that he moved back again to 15 and selected Corey Coleman as the first receiver drafted. In 2017, he moved out of the 12th pick with Deshaun Watson, Malik Hooker, and OJ Howard on the board to move down to 25 and take Peppers.
