Are the Cleveland Browns Progressing or Regressing?

The Browns have a young roster with just three players 30 years of age or older. Those three are punter Britton Colquitt, OT Joe Thomas, and CB Jason McCourty who was brought on because of injuries to the other corners.

Thomas also becomes the only player who has been on the team longer than 2014. Yes, the front office has done the job they wanted of gutting this team and completely rebuilding it from the ground up.

With the cuts, some of these young guys will get the benefit of more playing time which is necessary for them to progress and improve. During the rebuild time is most critical for that to happen so when the team is ready to make that jump, they can do so accordingly.

On the other hand it creates problems. The team lacks a lot of veteran leadership and players that can help the young guys develop.

In a league that is in win now or get fired mode, head coach Hue Jackson is left in a vulnerable position. Jason La Canfora wrote an article before the season about his clashes with the front office for getting rid of veterans such as Haden and Davis that would have offered that veteran leadership and also provided talent they need for their team to win instead of diminishing it to rebuild the roster.

This year’s current team is not expected to succeed once again and has only further proven that. Kizer is expected to take over the role at QB but the front office has left him without any talent at WR.

He leads the league in interceptions with nine but I wonder how much of that was due to average WRs not being able to separate versus him just holding onto the ball too long or not going through the progressions quick enough. The secondary still has a lot of question marks with young corners and safeties that do not have a lot of starting experience or depth.
