Indians fall to Yankees 7-4 in a game that wasn’t the pitchers’ duel everyone expected; three takeaways

1. Kluber day

Tribe ace Corey Kluber pitched 7 1/3 innings allowing eight hits, six earned runs, two walks and recording nine strikeouts.  It’s the first loss he’s earned in the last 75 games in which the Indians have given him four or more runs of support.

Kluber didn’t allow a hit until the third inning when he gave up a leadoff double to Miguel Andujar, followed by a home run to Brett Gardner. In the fourth inning, Kluber gave up a leadoff homer to Didi Gregorius, and an RBI double to Greg Bird.

Over the course of the next three innings, Kluber gave up just two more hits and came out to start the eighth. After walking Gregorius and giving up an RBI double to Aaron Hicks, however, Kluber’s evening was done.

Kluber now has a 5.03 ERA over his last six starts for Cleveland, per Jordan Bastian. He is now 5-2 in eight career starts vs. New York.

He ends the first half of the season with 132 strikeouts and just 17 walks, good for a 7.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio that ranks second in club history.
