A Look at the Week Ahead for Cleveland State Vikings Athletics

Men’s Basketball
• CSU (2-5) plays two games this week, hosting Western Michigan at 7:00 pm on Wednesday (Dec. 7) at Quicken Loans Arena and traveling to No. 15 Purdue for a 12:00 pm contest on Saturday (Dec. 10).
• The Vikings split two games last week, falling at Arkansas State on Wedensday and defeating Bethune-Cookman, 73-62, on Saturday at the Q.
• Demonte Flannigan averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two games, including a 21-point, nine rebound effort in Saturday’s win over B-CU. It was his fifth career 20-point game.
• Rob Edwards scored 19 points in the win over B-CU and is ranked seventh in the Horizon League in scoring at 16.1 points per game.

Women’s Basketball
• Cleveland State (3-4) will continue the 2016 season with two games this week, traveling to Eastern Illinois for a  midweek contest on Wednesday, December 7 before hosting Notre Dame College on Saturday, December 10.
• The Vikings went 1-1 at the Navy Classic over the weekend falling to Navy (88-63) in the opening game, before picking up a 69-65 victory over Richmond in the second contest.
• Ashanti Abshaw was named to the Navy Classic All-Tournament Team, after averaging 25.0 points per game on the weekend, including a 30-point performance against Richmond.

Swimming & Diving
•  CSU returns to action this weekend as it hosts Canisius in a dual meet on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 1:00 p.m. in the final event of the calendar year for both teams.
• The CSU men won the Magnus Cup in their last competitive action (Nov. 18-20) for the third consecutive season, as they accrued 1,608.5 points.
• Senior Philipp Sikatzki broke the school record in the 200 IM, reset two pool records and notched NCAA ‘B’ cut times in four events. Sophomore Tommi Wolst book the school record in the 200 backstroke and surpassed two NCAA ‘B’ standards.
• The CSU women finished fourth of 14 teams at the Magnus Cup with 800.5 points at the Magnus Cup, their best finish at the meet since 2013.
• Sophomore Molly McNamara broke the school record in the 100 fly, with a ‘B’ standard, and also won the 200 fly. Junior Tobie Zeller won the 100 breaststroke for the Vikings.

Volleyball
• Cleveland State (25-6) finished the 2016 season with a 25-6 record after falling to Arizona in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament last weekend.
• The Vikings were making their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and their second straight, after capturing the 2016 Horizon League Regular Season and Tournament titles.
• This marked the seventh 20-win season under head coach Chuck Voss and the 16th 20-win campaign in program history.

Wrestling
• Cleveland State (1-2) continues action this Sunday, Dec. 11, as it travels to Eastern Michigan to compete in a tri-dual agains the host Eagles and Big Ten foe Indiana.
• The Vikings had 11 wrestlers compete at the Storm Open last weekend at Lake Erie. Sophomore Evan Cheek (141) and redshirt junior Nick Corba (184) both won the titles in their respective weight classes.
• Freshman Devon Pingel took second at 174, as his lone loss was to a returning All-American from Ohio State. Six Vikings placed among the top six at the event.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Evan Cheek| Sophomore | Wrestling | Milan, Ohio

Cheek claimed the 141 pound title at the Storm Open over the weekend, winning all four of his matches to improve to 8-3 this year. He earned a seven-point win in his opening match, won by technical fall in the quarterfinals and earned a 15-1 major decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Cheek claimed an 18-8 major decision.

Named to Navy Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 25.0 ppg and shooting 53-percent from the floor in two games.

Demonte Flannigan | Sr. | Men’s Basketball
Averaged 17.5 points in two games last week, including a 21-point, nine rebound effort in Saturday’s win.

Nick Corba | Junior | Wrestling
Went 4-0 at 184 pounds at the Storm Open to claim the title, his second title of the season and improve to 10-2 this year.
