Solon Moves to 6-1; Tops Strongsville 30-0 in Greater Cleveland Conference Showdown

STRONGSVILLE, OHIO – The Solon Comets Friday night continued their run to the postseason, taking care of business on the road with a solid 30-0 win over the Strongsville Mustangs in a Greater Cleveland Conference showdown.

The Mustangs, now 1-6, stood toe to toe with the Comets, and some would argue may have been the better defensive team in this game, despite the final score.

Solon asserted their dominance early on with a first drive five-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Joe Bubonics to end-zone heavy target Darryl Sinclair.

After a quick fumble by Strongsville’s sophomore starting quarterback Jony Major, Solon seemed primed to score again.

However, safety John Spragg intercepted Bubonic’s pass at the Mustang one yard line, effectively pushing the momentum back into Strongsville’s favor.

As the half progressed, it was clear that passing was not an option for the home team, as the Mustang’s had no pass attempts until under five minutes to go in the first half.

After completing his first attempt of the game, quarterback Jony Major seemed to have Strongsville ready to close the gap to a one score game until cornerback Ryan McCurry intercepted him on a perfectly read curl route that resulted in a seventy-four yard interception return for a touchdown.

This proved to be a huge moral and momentum stunner to the Mustangs, who had kept the Solon high-powered offense in check throughout most of the game.

As the half closed out, a Hail Mary attempt by Major saw him throw his second interception in the first half, as McCurry would again prove to be the Mustang quarterbacks worst nightmare.

The second half featured more of the same, as though Strongsville held Solon to just 235 yards of total offense, they still could only muster up 125 yards themselves.

Solon’s defense was a major part of the struggles seen as well, forcing three total interceptions, as well as getting to Major for six sacks on the day.

Another touchdown late in the third quarts completely iced the game for the comets and their quarterback Bubonics, who finished twelve for eighteen for nearly one hundred eighty yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Solon will face the Elyria Pioneers (3-4) next week at home.

As for the Mustangs, they will take some momentum defensively into next weeks matchup with a tough, battle tested (3-4) Mentor team, who will be fresh off their 35-32 victory with conference leader Medina.

The Mustangs will play Thursday, and the Comets Friday, with both kickoffs set for 7:00PM.
