Predicting the Cavaliers 2015-2016 Opening Day Roster

On the Bubble

If you’re keeping score at home, there are ten “locks” listed above. That leaves two spots open for someone to grab. Let’s take a look at the players fighting for one of those two spots.

SG Joe Harris – Harris spent more time on the court in Canton with the Cavs’ D-League affiliate, the Charge, than he did in Cleveland. He had a great season there, averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. Harris did not see much time at the NBA level, playing 9 minutes per game over the course of 51 games. In his second year, Harris could be promoted to a role player in Cleveland, but he has some formidable competition within the preseason roster fighting for the backup shooting guard role.

PG/SG Jared Cunningham – Cunningham signed with the Cavaliers in August with a less than average chance of making the team. Shumpert was healthy and was in line to be the starting shooting guard. Since Shumpert’s injury, it has opened up the possibility for Cunningham to make the squad and he has taken advantage of it. Cunningham turned heads with a 31-point performance in the second preseason game in Philadelphia. He leads the team in scoring through four preseason games, averaging 15 points per game, and is playing an average of 25 minutes. Cunningham is a player to watch the remainder of the preseason and could earn a spot on the 12-man roster.

PG Quinn Cook – Cook went undrafted after playing four seasons at Duke University. He has seen a decent amount of playing time in the preseason, averaging 16 minutes per game over the course of four games. It would be unorthodox to add an undrafted point guard to the team, but many teams in the league carry three point guards and with Irving injured, there is a chance for Quinn to be on the roster.

SF/PF Austin Daye – Daye is a 6-11 stretch forward, who can play the 3 or the 4. Daye has played six seasons in the NBA and could make the team to provide some depth at the power forward position. If Blatt opts to go with an experienced NBA veteran over a younger, less experienced player, Daye could land a final roster spot.
