A Look at the Week Ahead for Cleveland State Vikings Athletics

A LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING

MEN’S BASKETBALL
•    Cleveland State (2-4) plays two games this week, traveling to Toledo on Wednesday (Dec. 2) at 7:00 pm and hosting Kent State at 3:00 pm on Saturday (Dec. 5) at Quicken Loans Arena.
•    It will be the first of five games at Quicken Loans Arena this year for the Vikings and a doubleheader with the CSU women’s team hosting Bowling Green at 1:00 pm.
•    The Vikings finished as the runner-up at the Cancun Challenge Mayan Division over the Thanksgiving holiday, defeating Rider and falling to South Dakota State. Rob Edwards and Ande Yates were both named to the all-tournament team.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
•    The Vikings (0-4) will split their games at home and on the road this week, traveling to Kent State for a midweek matchup on Wednesday (Dec. 2) and then hosting Bowling Green on Saturday (Dec. 5).
•    Saturday’s contest against Bowling Green will be played at Quicken Loans arena – the first of two women’s games to be played downtown at The Q this season.
•    Saturday’s game will also be a doubleheader with the men’s team – the first of seven twinbills for the basketball teams this year.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
•    CSU (3-2) returns to action at the Akron Zippy Invitational from Friday through Sunday (Dec. 4-6).
•    The Vikings captured the Magnus Cup in Busbey Natatorium two weeks ago, besting the other five teams in the event.
•    The Vikings set records on each day of the event, including Philipp Sikatzki swimming a 46.93 in the 100 butterfly to break a 31-year old record. Szymon Golczyk grabbed a varsity record in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:46.30, beating the old record by .20 seconds.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
•    CSU (2-6) returns to action at the Akron Zippy Invitational from Friday through Sunday (Dec. 4-6).
•    CSU finished fifth of 10 teams at the Magnus Cup two weeks ago in Busbey Natatorium.
•    Molly McNamara re-wrote the 200 Fly varsity record book with a time of 2:01.12, beating the previous time of 2:02.42.

VOLLEYBALL
•    After capturing the 2015 Horizon League Tournament Title, the Vikings earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will face top-seeded USC in the First Round of the 2015 NCAA Volleyball Championship.
•    Cleveland State’s first round contest will be played at USC on Thursday, December 3 at 10:30 p.m. EST, with the winner advancing to face the winner of Northern Arizona/San Diego in the second round on Friday, December 4.
•    This will be Cleveland State’s third appearance in the NCAA Championship, as the Vikings also earned a spot in the tournament during the 2007 and 2012 seasons.
•    The Vikings enter the NCAA Championship with a 26-6 record this season – a mark that ties the program record for wins in a season under current head coach Chuck Voss.

WRESTLING
•    The Vikings (1-2) are out of action until they host the CSU Invitational on Dec. 12 in Woodling Gym.
•    CSU battled defending national champion Ohio State last Tuesday before falling, 26-18, in front of 1,811 in Woodling Gym.

    •    Riley Shaw, ranked eighth in the nation, improved to 11-0 this year with a 6-4 win at heavyweight.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Rob Edwards, Men’s Basketball, Freshman, Detroit, Mich.

Edwards averaged 12.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in three games last week. He was named to the Cancun Challenge Mayan Division All-Tournament after averaging 12.0 points in two games, including 17 in a win over Rider. He also scored 14 points at No. 2 Maryland and shot .519 (14-27) from the field over the three games.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Ashanti Abshaw: The women’s basketball freshman scored a career-high 21 points with five rebounds, two assists and two steals at Niagara.

Nick Montgomery: The junior wrestling was down 5-0 in his match vs. Ohio State, but fought back to earn six points with a pin at the 5:34 mark.

Riley Shaw: The senior men’s wrestler who is ranked No. 8 in the nation improved to 11-0 this year with a 6-4 win against Ohio State on Tuesday.
