Six Takeaways From the First Day of the 2017 NFL Draft

3.) Teams Are Valuing the Defensive Depth

Not only were the QBs in the Draft overdrafted but so were the WRs. I did not see one going earlier than 10, and maybe three getting selected in the first round altogether. Instead three went in the top nine and so did two running backs which normally don’t warrant high first round picks.

While I can agree with the backs this year the wide receivers have me scratching my head. With a lot of talented players on defense falling because of Trubisky, did the WRs go because there may have been a shortage by the beginning of round two or because the depth at the defense is so good?

I still don’t believe teams would willingly reach for WRs that early and pass us better players if they did not feel like someone on defense they could get at round two was that much better than the offensive player. The surprising lack of defense early really makes me feel like teams want the players that fall to them in the midrounds with the position depth.
