Shoremen Cruise To 4-1 Victory On The Pitch Against Steele

The Avon Lake Shoremen bounced back after a tough defeat last night and cruised to a 4-1 win over visiting Amherst Steele tonight.

The Shoremen looked like a completely different team than the one who showed up to play Bay Village last night, and unlike yesterday they got off to a fast start. Avon Lake had the Comets on their heels from the opening whistle, and cashed in for an early goal.

Junior Cam Salco made a hard run to the far post that senior Charlie Yungvirt spotted, and he directed a diagonal cross toward Salco that was met by an unlucky Amherst defender and deflected into his own net, just 5 minutes into the game.

Avon Lake continued to step up to the Comets and try to force them into turnovers. Just 9 minutes later Yungvirt picked a ball in the Amherst defensive half and worked a nifty give and go with fellow senior Jack Lawniczak that ended with Yungvirt’s fourth goal of the year to make it 2-0 Shoremen.

That pressure continued to yield positive results as just a few minutes later another ball recovered in Amherst’s half, this time after a Shoremen corner kick, found its way back to Lawniczak, who delivered an inch perfect cross into the six yard box for junior Andrew Jacobson to slam home. The goal was Jacobson’s fourth of the season.

Amherst was able to gain a better start in the second half, mostly playing Avon Lake even until a through ball was put away by the Comets to make it 3-1 in the 53rd minute.

There have been times this season where Avon Lake has looked dominant but then allowed an opponent back into a game, leading to many tense moments. But tonight was not like that at all as the Shoremen stayed composed even after letting in the early second half goal.

The Shoremen continued to assert control and stifle the Comets, who were desperate to find another goal to make things more interesting.

In the 73rd minute their dominance was rewarded as senior Nick Daggett scored from a Lawniczak corner kick to make it 4-1. Daggett now has scored a team-leading 8 goals this year. Lawniczak’ 3 assists tonight now have him at a whopping 12 this year, as he continues to pace the potent Shoremen attack.

“I’m very proud of how the boys dealt with the adversity of last night’s defeat, and how we took it to a solid Amherst team from the start,” said Coach Pete Klepek.

“We have 5 games left this season and will need to build on this performance if we want to achieve our goals.”

With the final score of 4-1 Avon Lake improves to 6-2-3 on the season, 3-1-2 in the SWC. JV also won tonight by a score of 2-0 after goals by juniors Michael Mandel and Kristof Nieschwitz. They are now 9-1-1 on the season.

Avon Lake now has a week to prepare for their next game, an important SWC test away at Berea Midpark on Wednesday September 27th. Games are at 5pm and 7pm.
