Oberlin edges by Brooklyn 3-1 in Boys Soccer Clash!

BROOKLYN, Ohio – The Oberlin High School Phoenix traveled to Brooklyn High School Wednesday night to take on the Brooklyn Hurricanes in Varsity Boys soccer action.

11 seconds into the game Brooklyn goal keeper Aaron Wrost made a beautiful save on an Oberlin break away scoring attempt. Minutes later however, after another beautiful save from Wrost, Oberlin striker Tam Cadenhead was able to use the put back to score and put Oberlin up, 1-0 less than 5 minutes into the contest.

Wrost would remain under constant pressure, but he would refuse to fold as at the 11 minute mark of the first he made another beautiful save to keep it at 1-0. Less than 30 seconds after that, Wrost was at it again shutting down another Oberlin break away.

Brooklyn would get on the board with their first goal at the 21 minute mark of the first half when Merouane Sadji connected from about 20 yards out on a powerful strike to tie the game.

Sadly, for the Hurricanes, the game would not remain tied long as less than two minutes later, it was Louis Gerard finding the back of the net to place Oberlin back on top 2-1. The Oberlin goal came only seconds after a
tremendous penalty kick save by Wrost.

Brooklyn did have a chance to tie it late into the first half when an excellent break away by Merouane Sadji was snuffed out at the last second by a stingy Oberlin defense. Sadji was extremely impressive all night with some incredible foot skills and dribbling ability.

The first half ended with a score of 2-1 Oberlin. The Phoenix also led in the shot department by a margin of 12-6.

Oberlin would tack another goal, this time by Thayer Preston halfway through the second half to increase their lead to 3-1. Once again the score came only seconds after a great penalty kick save by Wrost.

It was ironic because that was the second time in the game that Wrost would make a great penalty kick save, only to give up a goal seconds later. The game would end with that same score, a 3-1 Oberlin victory.

After the game I spoke with Brooklyn head coach Chris Roegiers who had this to say about the game, “Oberlin played with more energy than we had, and they capitalized on their chances.”

I went on to ask about the great game from GK Aaron Wrost who had 20 saves, “He just has a great read of the game for a young player and has the chance to improve over the next few years.”

The Hurricanes will next host the visiting Independence Local School on Saturday while Oberlin travels to Wickliffe on Saturday.
