Indians Outlast Royals 3-2; Tribe Earns Home-field Advantage for ALDS Against Boston Red Sox

The Cleveland Indians edged out a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon over the Royals in Kansas City. Thanks to some help from Detroit and Toronto, the Tribe does not have to travel to Detroit for a game on Monday and will own home-field advantage in the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox.

It was a wild game, as catcher Yan Gomes was cleared to bat in MLB action for the first time since July.

The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, when Whit Merrifield drove in Jarrod Dyson with an RBI double.

As fate would have it, Gomes hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat.

Both sides were tied at two until the top of the eighth, when Carlos Santana drew a lead-off walk, Jason Kipnis doubled, and Francisco Lindor drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

Josh Tomlin worked 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, before turning it over to the bullpen with a one-run lead.

Andrew Miller shut the Royals down in the eighth, leaving it up to Cody Allen in the bottom of the ninth.

Salvador Perez drew a one-out walk and speedster Terrence Gore would pinch-run, giving Kansas City a chance to tie.

Indians catcher Roberto Perez gunned down Gore attempting to steal second and Allen would strike out Paulo Orlando to end the game.

After the game, the Baltimore Orioles clinched a Wild Card spot with a win over the Yankees, the Detroit Tigers were eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Braves, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox, giving Cleveland homefield advantage in the American League Divisional Series.
