Indians Claim Utility Man Michael Martinez Off Waivers From the Red Sox

CLEVELAND – The Indians made a waiver claim on Wednesday, as they brought back to the team utility man Michael Martinez. He was claimed on outright waivers from the Red Sox.

Martinez returns to the Indians organization after spending much of the first half in Cleveland, hitting .283 (17-60) with 3 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI and 10 runs scored in 32 games while logging time at five different positions.

He was designated for assignment by Cleveland on July 2 and traded to the Red Sox on July 8. He appeared in 4 games for the Red Sox (1-for-6, RS) and was designated for assignment on August 2 following the trading deadline. He will meet the Major League club in New York tomorrow with a corresponding 25-man roster move to follow.

To allow room on the 40-man roster for Martinez, lefty pitcher Tyler Olson has been designated for assignment.
