Indians Recall Pitcher Shawn Morimando, Add Michael Martinez to the Roster

The Indians today made a couple roster moves as they get set for a weekend series with the New York Yankees in the Bronx.

The team recalled lefty pitcher Shawn Morimando from AAA Columbus, and optioned two players, pitcher Ryan Merritt and infielder Erik Gonzalez back to AAA Columbus.

The team also added newly picked up off waivers utility man Michael Martinez to the 25-man roster.

Morimando has split the season between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus, going a combined 13-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 21 starts (124.2IP, 110H, 40ER, 44BB, 94SO).

He is currently leading all Indians Minor League pitchers in wins, is 4th in ERA (2.89) and 3rd in innings (124.2IP). He was with the Indians on July 2 and made his Major League debut in relief that day in Toronto (3.2IP, 6H, 2R/ER, 1BB, 4SO).

He spent the rest of July in AAA Columbus, going 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 5 starts (31.1IP, 33H, 8ER, 8BB, 21 SO) and has not allowed a run over his last 2 starts since July 27 (13.0IP, 9H, 0R).
