Baron Cup II First Seed Avon Eagles Skate to 4-2 Victory Over Bay Rockets

BROOKLYN, OHIO – Baron Cup II kicked off Monday night in Brooklyn, and the Avon Eagles, the top seed in Division A continued their strong season with a 4-2 win over the Bay Rockets.

Avon moves on in the tourney which will wrap up on Sunday, as they will await the winner of Benedictine and NDCL in a game that will be played on Tuesday at 8:30pm.

The Eagles have been solid all season, going 25-5-1 into play in the Baron Cup, and while it was close for the first two periods, they took a 3-1 lead into the third period and even when Bay closed it to 3-2, they scored a clinching goal with 8:44 to play to seal the win.

Danny Fielding stopped 23 of 25 shots for the Eagles, while on the offensive side it was Zach Zwiercki scoring a goal and assist in the victory.

The Rockets (13-10-1) were led by a pair of goals by junior center Jacob Gaudino, but were not able to get the game tying goal after closing it to 3-2 in the third period.

The Eagles got the only goal in what turned out to be a very face paced first period, with Avon controlling most of the tempo with 15 shots on goal to six for Bay.

Senior forward Shane Dockerty scored the goal, his 16th of the year with Zwiercki and Goetz getting the assists with 5:21 left in the first to give Avon the lead.

The score remained 1-0 till the Rockets got on the board on a nifty breakaway goal by Jacob Gaudino to knot the game at one with 5:31 to play in the 2nd period.

The assist for the Rockets went to his brother Jake, but the game would not stay tied very long as the Eagles quickly came right back to take control back.

The second Eagles goal came just over a minute later, with freshman forward Ian Dargai scoring the goal with the assist being credited to Jarret Greene to make it 2-1.

Avon took their first two-goal lead of the game with 42.3 left in the second period, as Zwiercki notched his 20th goal of the season to make it 3-1.

Junior Jacob Folds got the assist on the Zwiercki goal, as the second period closed with Avon holding the two goal edge.

The Eagles outshot Bay 13-11 in the second period.

The Rockets got back within one in the third period as Gaudino got his second goal of the night with 12:56 to play to make it a 3-2 affair.

The Eagles though showed again their experience as they were able to create chances, and scored a huge fourth goal with 8:44 remaining, as Greene found the net to make it 4-2.

The assist on the final goal went to senior forward Alex Provenza.

Avon’s defense was able to hold off Bay for the final eight plus minutes, and notched the win to move on to play on Friday at 5:30pm.

The Eagles outshot the Rockets 36-25 in the win.
