3.) Do Mock Drafts
Oh the wonderful world of mock drafts. They can be very helpful if you haven’t used the site or app before. Each one is set up a little different so doing a mock one ahead of time can help you become familiar with where to look for things if you’re doing an online draft instead of fumbling around the day of the draft. They can also help you become more familiar with draft tendencies. I think you have about a 2% chance of having a full lobby of people that care about the mock but it’s worth the try. There are always your lobby trolls or the people that quit after three rounds and the auto draft kills the rest of the unexpected factor. What you can get out of it is drafting from multiple draft spots and get an idea of what players will be there and what rounds some of your favorite players are going. Knowing this ahead of time can give you a leg up over going in blind.
4.) Look At Several Experts Lists
One thing I’ve found consistent is that each site is slightly different on some players. A player on ESPN might be ranked lower on CBS and NFL.com but higher on Yahoo. The experts for each one tend to be pretty close to each other with the different sites being more of a variation. Looking into several sites can give you a better feel or more consistency on the general consensus regarding a player. Also, if the site you are drafting on has a player lower than some other sites, you might be able to steal that player if people are going off just the site during the draft. Getting a variety of opinions is better than just one.
5.) Create Your Own Draft Board
Nothing is better though than creating your own draft board. Feel free to use those experts rankings as a guide, but in the end create your own. You may like somebody that everyone hates. Having your own rankings makes it easier for you to have confidence in each pick. There’s nothing worse than scrolling through all the WR’s available in the tenth round and trying to decide in one minute or less which one is the best fit. Having your sheet of rankings ready to go makes it so much easier. I’d look at the top three or so and based on what’s going on with my team pick the best of that three. Just print it out and cross them off as they get picked. Simple as that.
