By John Bolino

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – Historic Rayen Stadium on the North Side of Youngstown was home to the Youngstown Chaney Cowboys first football game in nine years Thursday night.

A packed house watched the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals beat the Chaney Cowboys 13-6 in a tight tug of war all night.

The head coaches for both teams know each other very well Chaney’s head coach Chris Amill spent 15 years at Cardinal Mooney under Mooney head coach PJ Fecko.

The game started with Cardinal Mooney going three and out on their first possession. Chaney’s first offensive possession in nine years resulted in a three-yard touchdown by senior running back Key-Shaun Davis. The extra point failed and with 8:28 left in 1st quarter the Cowboy’s were up 6-0.

Cardinal Mooney’s offense did not register a, first down until 7:09 left in the 2nd quarter.

Both teams could not threaten until Mooney went on a four minute drive to end the half and kicked a 21-yard field goal by Junior Brian Philbin as time expired in the second quarter to go into half time down 6-3.

Both team’s threw interceptions on their first drives of the third quarter.

The two teams battled for field position for the rest of quarter. Starting the fourth quarter Mooney kicked a 29-yard field goal on the first play of the quarter to tie the game at six.

Chaney then went three-and-out on their next possession. Mooney took over on their own 37-yard line. Mooney took over with 9:37 left in the game and marched down the field on the back of sophomore running back Zyere Rodgers who finished the game with 25 carries for 159 yards.

The drive finished with 3:31 left in the game with junior Quarterback Pat Guerrieri plunging in behind left guard from three yards out to make the score after the extra point 13-6.

Chaney took over on their own 25-yard line and on 2-and-5 from the 30, junior quarterback Delshawn Petrosky rolled to right and threw the ball over his intended target right in the hands of a waiting Cardinal Mooney defender to put the game away.

Chaney would get one more chance to tie the ball game and again Petrosky rolled out this time to his left on first play of his last possession and had a ball tipped right into the hands of a waiting Mooney defender.

Petrosky ended the game 9-for-25 for 71 yards and three interceptions.

Cardinal Mooney (1-0) play’s defending state champion Akron Hoban on the road next week. While Youngstown Chaney (0-1) plays Beachwood at home next week.
