In a matchup between two of the top teams in Division I, Walsh Jesuit (8-2) made quick work of Hoban (9-4), taking down the Knights 15-5 in five innings Thursday evening. After Hoban scored four runs in the first, Xavier commit Ryan Piech settled in and allowed just one hit the rest of the way en route to picking up the win.

The Warriors started off hot as Alejandro Covas (Youngstown State) started things off with a double to deep left field. Landan Browning would retire the next two Walsh hitters on just five pitches but the Warriors were just getting started. John Simecek (Saint Xavier) hit a single to left, scoring Covas, to give Walsh a 1-0 lead. Following a Zach Halligan walk, Justin Bremmer (Canisius) crushed a three-run homer to right center to put them up 4-0.

Facing an early deficit, the Hoban bats answered the call in the home half of the first. Parker Falkenstein (Wright State) led things off when he reached base on an error on an infield pop fly. Jordan Kievman (Louisville) would draw a walk and, with two outs, Andrew Karhoff (Ohio State) hit an RBI single to put the Knights on the board. Nate Shimmel would follow that up with a single of his own, scoring Kievman. Up came Michael Ciavolella (Ohio State) who laced a triple into the outfield, scoring two runs. Ciavolella would score one batter later on a Ryan Burns single to put Hoban up 5-4 after one.

Walsh stayed hot in the second, quickly loading the bases with nobody out. Joey Canzoni (Cincinnati) drew a walk, scoring Gavin Gubanyor to tie things up. Mason Eckelman (Ohio State) hit a sacrifice fly to left, bringing in Topher Salek and giving the Warriors a 6-5 lead. Covas would score again on a Halligan fly out to make it 7-5 heading to the bottom of the second.

Unlike his first time through the order, Piech breezed through the top of the Knights lineup on just ten pitches. In the top of the third, Gubanyor scored again and so did Salek via an RBI single from Canzoni. After Canzoni came around to score himself, the Warriors led 10-5. Shimmel would draw a walk in the home half, but Piech continued to cruise, holding the five run lead.

Like clockwork, the Walsh bats continued to roll in the fourth. Doubles from Halligan, Shawn Sullivan (Alabama), and Canzoni, a single from Eckelman, and walks to Gubanyor and Covas led to a five run Warriors inning. All nine batters reached the plate and Walsh took a 15-5 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

Falkenstein and Will Givens would reach base to give Hoban some life, but Piech got out of the inning unscathed. Bremmer would hit a double in the top of the fifth but that was it for the action, as Walsh Jesuit came away with a huge 15-5 win.

Hoban will look to get back on track Friday night as they head to Tallmadge to take on the Blue Devils (9-4). Walsh is on the road again Friday as they travel to Lake to square off with the Blue Streaks (8-4).
