2016 AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose to win the WWE Heavyweight Championship.
Backlash returned to Pay Per View for the first time since 2009. It was also the first time that Backlash was not the first Pay Per View to follow a WrestleMania. In fact, it wasn’t held until September 2016. A strange twist of date selection for sure. It was a Smackdown only Pay Per View, much like the one we currently have tonight.
It was a card based on championships changing hands, and being crowned for vacant titles that didn’t currently have champions with the brand split being so new. Becky Lynch defeated Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Naomi, Natalya, and Nikki Bella in a Six-pack elimination challenge for the inaugural WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship. Also, Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso to capture the inaugural WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
