Kenston Girls Soccer Coach Jonathan Kostoff has been one of the top Soccer coaches in Northeast Ohio over the last six years.  First, Kostoff had success as the Varsity Girls Soccer coach at Beachwood and  he has continued that success as the Head Coach of the Kenston Girls Soccer Team.

On Thursday night Coach Kostoff and the Kenston Bombers Girls soccer team continued that success in their home opener as they defeated West Geauga 3-0.

Kenston took the lead when Bria Devlin made an amazing shot with her left foot from around 10 yards.  Heavily guarded by a West Geauga defender, Devlin got the ball off just in time and hit a swerve that went just over the outstretched arms of the West Geauga goalie into the top middle of the goal.

With Devlin’s goal, the Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the 22 minute.

That would be all the scoring the Bombers would need as their defensive effort made it extremely difficult to get an open shot on goal.

The Bombers added two more goals in the second half.

Ashlyn Hunter added a second goal for the Bombers in the 68th minute of the game.

Then freshman Sofia Macias scored the final goal of the night  in the 79th minute to make the final score 3-0.

In the post-game interview Coach Kostoff spoke about the importance of the psychology of coaching in order to have successful teams.

In particular, Coach Kostoff emphasized the importance of teaching his athletes to control what they can control, and not worry about what they do not have control over.

“After teams are selected, literally the next day, varsity sat down and we did a classroom session,” said Coach Kostoff.“We went over a multitude of things, like goals, but we really go over what we can control and what we can’t control. If we take care of the things we can control, the things that are in own power, our effort, our attitude, our intensity, playing our role really, really well, doing things the right way, that gives us a chance to win in every situation. We have stressed that for the four years I have been here, and six years I have been a head coach. We try to respond to all moments with positivity.”

Kenston returns to the pitch on Saturday when they face Canfield.

West Geauga plays again on Saturday against Bay.
