Brecksville Broadview Hts vs Avon in D II Region 6 quarterfinal

High school football in NE Ohio is special and game 2 of the 6 games playoff slate is in the books. Friday was a D II Region 6 quarterfinal. I made my way from News – Talk 1480 WHBC to Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet Stadium in Avon for the Eagles hosting the Brecksville Broadview Hts Bees, covering the 80 miles in record time, although I do adhere to the “rule” a State Trooper told me, “8 you’re fine, 9 you’re mine,” and I was greeted by Avon’s finest Officer Zach D’Orazio who instructed me where to park. I strolled a few feet into the stadium and to say excitement was in the air is an understatement. I traversed the steps to the press box, grabbed my rosters and headed to the sidelines. Yes, the press box has padded sears and a great view from above of the entire field, but I truly enjoy feeling and hearing the game as one can only do from the sidelines.

When both teams made their ways on to the field the first thing noticeable that really stood out was the size of the squads. I am not talking height and weight but sheer numbers. Avon dressed at least 100 players while BBHS had a respectable 50 players.

Also, before the game I was welcomed and able to speak to both head coaches. Jason Black of the Bees was focused on stopping the main weapons of the Eagles while Avon’s Mike Elder noted, in his humble “it’s them not me manner” that “Jakorian Caffey, Nolan Good and Matt Maxey make me look like a good coach.”

The Bees got the opening kickoff starting at their own 35 and used a nice chunk of the clock as they got on the scoreboard via a one-yard Colin Seibert run and a George Ganim point after to lead 7-0.

What happened after that was not shocking knowing the firepower the Eagles have in their arsenal but a surprise knowing the Bees gave up 24 points tops in a game this year. What happened? This: Avon went on a 49-0 run the rest of the game putting up 447 yards to Brecksville Broadview Hts 175 while Jakorian Caffey had 174 yards rushing and 4 TD’s.

Whether Jakorian ran inside or outside he simply breaks tackles, makes defenders miss and puts on the jets as needed. He had a 73-yard run that was simply electric while QB Nolan Good was the conductor of this world class Eagles Orchestra with many making sweet music on offense including WR Matt Maxey, the offensive line and back up QB Blake Elder (who connected with Paul Leftrict for a 54-yard TD).

For the Bees, the combo of QB Seibert to WR Kyle Keener stood out but as the game went on not only was Keener facing double coverage, but the Eagles were rolling a safety to his side too.

Next week it is the Regional Semifinals as Avon will play SWC foe Olmsted Falls. The bottom line and it is emotional is that most of the seniors of Brecksville Broadview Hts, as it is with any HS football program, have played their last game of putting on the pads and lacing up the cleats football.

Avon’s goal per Head Coach Mike Elder and reported by Marissa McNees of the Chronicle-Telegram is simply this: “Our goal is to win a state championship. We’re not going to shy away from that. People can’t talk us out of that.”
