Akron Zips Win Homecoming Game Over Miami (OH), 35-23

Written by:  Donte A. Durham

The Akron Zips improved to 2-0 in the MAC after a sound 35-23 victory over Miami of Ohio.  The Zips controlled the game in all phases as their offense out gained Miami on the ground and through the air (125 to 107 and 174 to 153 respectively).  The Zips led 14-3 after the 1st quarter, 21-6 at the half and 28-13 after 3.

Tra’Von Chapman led the Zips as he received his 2nd straight start of the season at quarterback, in place of starter Thomas Woodson.  Chapman led Akron in passing and rushing on the day.  He was 15-29 for 174 yards and 3 touchdowns.  On the ground he ran 10 times for 93 yards.  One of those runs was a 70- yard TD in the 1st quarter which gave the Zips the lead that they’d never surrender.  JoJo Natson, receiver, led the Zips with 7 catches for 81 yards and 2 TDs.  His second TD was Akron’s last score of the game for 32 yards; unfortunately, he injured his shoulder on the play and did not return.

On defense, the Zips gave up some yards through the air early but had a bend but don’t break mentality.  Miami was led by true Freshman Noah Wezensky who had some nice moments in the contest.  He orchestrated a nice opening drive that put Miami up 3-0 and throughout the game he made some nice passes.  He finished the contest 14-28 for 153 yards, throwing for 1 TD and 2 interceptions.  Three turnovers hurt the RedHawks on the day, as well as a 1-12 mark on 3rd downs.

The Zips will now host Western Michigan next Saturday with kickoff set for noon.  Miami will host Kent State.
