5 “Under the Radar” Players Cavs Should Trade For

Alright Cavs fans, it’s that time of year.

You’ve been refreshing Twitter like the rest of us for the past few days.

It’s the annual tradition of everyone freaking out about LeBron possibly leaving and the always classic Kevin Love trade machine scenarios.

This year’s edition has featured some prominent names, most notably All-Stars Paul George, Jimmy Butler and Carmelo Anthony.

George and Butler have been at the top of most fans’ wishlists this summer and although either of them appear to be a great fit in Cleveland, we thought it’d be fun to play Fantasy GM for a day (since the Cavs don’t even have a GM right now and their top candidate has never worked in a front office.)

Before we start, here are a couple disclaimers:

  1. These are hypothetical scenarios and are not based on any sources or knowledge of deals in the works.
  2. Don’t continue reading if you’re Kevin Love’s biggest fan. He’s going to be involved in each of these scenarios.

Scenario 1: Kyle Lowry for Kevin Love

Lowry reportedly has zero interest in re-signing with the Raptors and wants to join a contender. The Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs were reportedly interested in potentially signing him this summer, but the likelihood of that happening has dwindled in recent weeks, especially with the 76ers’ trade for the No. 1 pick, which will almost certainly be used on point guard Markelle Fultz.

Raptors Team President Masai Ujiri told reporters Tuesday Lowry wants to come back, possibly because the point guard is realizing the market is not great for him right now. But then again, what’s the team president supposed to say?

Lowry doesn’t have a ton of options. If he really has zero interest in joining Toronto, the Raptors could at least get something out of him by executing a sign-and-trade with the Cavs, acquiring Love, who’s under contract for three more seasons.

Adding Lowry into the Cavs’ arsenal gives Cleveland another 20 plus point scorer and he’s more than familiar with playing off the ball, since he and teammate DeMar DeRozan are both used to having the ball in their hands for extended stretches of time.

The Cavs could throw a lineup with Lowry at point guard and Kyrie Irving at shooting guard at times. Also, Lowry would be able to hold the second unit above water as the defacto backup point guard when LeBron and Irving are on the bench.

In the 2017 Eastern Conference Finals, Lowry was about as forthright as anyone when it came to giving credit to LeBron and the Cavs. He tipped his cap to a worthy opponent and didn’t take any shame in the fact that his Raptors were beat by a better team.

Lowry has a very close relationship with head coach Tyronn Lue and views him as a mentor. There wouldn’t be much reason to worry about his personality not fitting in with the Cavs.

As a number one or number two scoring option, Lowry has been one of the best point guards in the NBA for the past few seasons, starting in the 2016 All-Star Game.

Imagine the impact he could make on a team where he’s the third option, with LeBron and Irving elevating his level of play.
