Hawken Wins Pitcher’s Duel Over South Range 2-1

Hawken South Range

The Hawken Hawks made the most of their first regional appearance in 26 years. They took down the South Range Raiders 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Massillon High School. Both pitchers went the distance, but it was the Hawks’ Lucas Brandt getting the better of the Raiders’ Billy Skripac.

Despite picking up the loss, Skripac was dominant on the mound, only allowing three hits and one walk while striking out eight. For the Hawks, Brandt went seven innings, giving up three hits and three walks while fanning only two Raiders hitters. He found success pitching to contact while his defense made great plays behind him all game long.

South Range got on the board first in the top of the 5th when Shane Lindstrom drove a single to center, scoring Skripac. The lead wouldn’t last long, though, as the Hawks struck for two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Asher Kimball got the inning going when he hit his own single to center, scoring Tommy Clark. Senior Khalil Suggs put the Hawks up for good when he drove a double to deep left-center that scored Kimball.

This loss ends a very successful season for South Range and brings their final record to 22-5. With the win, Hawken (19-5) advances to the regional final, where they will square off with the Waynedale Golden Bears (25-4), who moved on with an 8-4 win over Youngstown Ursuline. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm Friday June 2 at Massillon High School. Tickets can be bought by clicking here to go to OHSAA’s site.
