Girls State Basketball Tournament: Aurora Tops Hathaway Brown 63-42 to Advance

AURORA, OHIO – Suburban League champion Aurora defeated Hathaway Brown 63-42 on Saturday, the first day of girls’ OHSAA basketball postseason tournament play.

The Lady Greenmen, 4th-seeded in the Division 1 Euclid sectional, jumped out to a 26-9 first quarter lead and were never seriously threatened.

Aurora forced Hathaway Brown into 20 first-half turnovers as they held a 38-20 lead at halftime. Junior guard Shayla Sellers had 11 of her team-high 19 points in the first half.

Hathaway Brown’s senior guard Jackie Carman sank a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer giving her 14 points at the intermission. Carman went on to lead all scorers in the game with 23 points.
The closest that Hathaway Brown could get in the second half was 16 points. The Blazers fought to a 44-32 advantage in rebounds, but could not generate nearly enough baskets to overtake Aurora.

Other double-digit scorers included Haley Ross (13 points), Dylynn Lasky (12), and Julia Mazanec (10) for Aurora and Ava Warcaba with 10 points for Hathaway Brown.

Aurora (21-2) advances to the sectional finals and will host Cleveland John Hay on Thursday evening.
