High School Football: Brecksville-Broadview Heights Look to ‘Sting’ the Bulldogs For Second Straight Year

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, OHIO – The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees will try and make it two in a row over the visiting Garfield Heights Bulldogs on Friday at 7pm at The Bee Hive. Brecksville trounced the Bulldogs from Garfield Heights to the tune of 42-0 at Garfield last year.

The Bees are seeking their second win in a row to start the season, after winning on opening night, 36-34 over host Padua. The upset-minded Bruins fought back from a 22-7 halftime deficit to nearly pull off the upset. Brecksville’s D stopped Padua on their two point conversion attempt in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter to hold on for victory.

Brecksville will need to play, smart, disciplined football, in order to keep the speedy Bulldogs from pulling off an upset. Brecksville’s defense gave up 460 total yards of offense (295 passing, 165 on the ground) to Padua last week. The Bees will need more performances like Jack O’Donnell (8 tackles, 2 sacks) and Michael Graham (8 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks) in order to keep Garfield Heights in check offensively.

The Bees should not have any issues scoring points this week, after the Bulldogs gave up 34 points to a talented Holy Name team on opening night. Brecksville put up 36 points on Padua last week, led by the passing combination of Senior QB Luke Strnad (17 of 28, 275 yards passing, 4 passing touchdowns, and another TD on the ground) and Senior Wide Receiver Joey McGonegal (5 catches, 113 yards, and 3 TD’s). Not to be forgotten, is Running back Alec Buckley’s standout performance (17 carries for 131, and 3 catches for another 32 yards in the air).

Garfield Heights got their season off to a rough 0-1 start after losing 34-21 to Holy Name in Parma Heights this past Saturday. Garfield is looking to rebound from their opening night loss and go on the road to take on a Brecksville team that was 7-3 last year.

Prediction: Breckvsille 37, Garfield Heights 21.
