Forget Defensive Player of The Year, Myles Garrett is the MVP

Cleveland Oh. – I know. I know. The MVP is a quarterback award. I get it. I truly do. But if the MVP is going to go to the ACTUAL Most Valuable Player, there is no player that means more to his team than Myles Garrett means to the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns are 7-3 at the moment. And while they have a team that was considered to be really good, no one expected the Browns to have to endure a season ending injury to Nick Chubb. No one predicted Deshaun Watson would be in and out of the lineup for the first 10 weeks before he suffered his own season ending injury. No one predicted the Browns would be sitting at 7-3 having to play a rookie QB, a practice squad QB, and signing a veteran QB that… let’s be honest, will more than likely get some playing time. But do you want to know why the Browns are 7-3? The name is Myles Garrett.

Garrett has the numbers to back this up. He is leading the league in sacks with 13. He’s on pace to break the sack record of 22. He has special teams plays, (we all remember the blocked FG against the Colts) he has recorded game changing sacks and came within a nose hair of a safety in the game against the Steelers in the Browns most recent win. He has been all over the place. He has four forced fumbles, recovered a fumble, and with his QB pressures, has caused 3 interceptions. The Browns are one of the NFL’s best defenses and Myles Garrett is the leader of that unit.

Yes, there are QB’s that are playing extremely well. I get it. The MVP has been won by a QB the last 11 years, with Adrian Peterson being the last non QB to win in 2012. I know a defensive player hasn’t won since 1986 when Lawrence Taylor won for the New York Giants. I get it. But isn’t it time to re-evaluate what the MVP means? If it’s going to automatically go to a QB, then call it the QB award. But if we are truly looking for the MOST VALUEABLE PLAYER…. This year, no player in the NFL has been more VALUABLE than Garrett. No team has had to endure season ending injuries to two of the top two players on the team, and still be a winning team.

The Browns are a half game out of being the top team in the AFC North, which everyone knows is the top division in football. There’s work to be done. The Browns need to more than likely be the AFC number 1 seed for people to truly see. Right now, they are a half game out of just that. They have gone through the toughest part of their schedule. The remaining games could end up being a time when Garrett can add to his stats. The Browns have a chance to do something special as a team, but… Myles Garrett should be the MVP of the league. Through 10 games, there is no player more valuable than Garrett. It’s time for the award voters to recognize it!
