Finalists announced for 24th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards

CLEVELAND – 24th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards presented by Medical Mutual and Ancora announces award finalists in five categories for Greater Cleveland Sports Commission’s annual fundraiser. The winner from each category will be announced live during Sports Awards which will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024, at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse (RMFH). Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

 

Finalists were selected by local sports and media outlets as well as an awards committee who chose outstanding athletes from Northeast Ohio’s following counties: Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark and Summit.

 

The finalists in the following categories were based on the highest number of votes: male and female high school athlete of the year, male and female collegiate athlete of the year and professional athlete of the year.

 

This year fans will have the opportunity to cast their votes to help determine a winner in each category. GCSC is accepting votes beginning today via its website. The deadline to vote will be on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, at 5 p.m. EST.

Female High School Athlete of the Year presented by University Hospitals Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute

Sophia Sindelar, Rocky River High School, Soccer

Brecksville-Broadview Heights Gymnastics Team

Tessa Knapp, Bay Village High School, Soccer

 

Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year presented by H. Jack’s Plumbing & Heating Co. “The Super Plumber!”

Lyle Yost, Ohio State University, Diving (Shaker Heights High School

Case Western Reserve University Men’s Tennis Team

Joe Whitman, Kent State University, Baseball (Hudson High School)

 

Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year presented by H. Jack’s Plumbing & Heating Co. “The Super Plumber!”

Destiny Leo, Cleveland State University, Basketball (Eastlake North High School)

Taylor Mikesell, Ohio State University, Basketball (Massillon Jackson High School)

Annie Roshak, Ashland University, Basketball (North Canton Hoover High School)

 

Professional Athlete of the Year presented by JP Morgan Chase

Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns, Defensive End

Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers, Shooting Guard

Josh Naylor, Cleveland Guardians, First Baseman

 

Sports Awards is the premier annual sports fundraiser supporting Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and celebrates a year of athletic achievements in Northeast Ohio from high school stars to professional athletes. Hosted by Holly Rowe, ESPN reporter and sports commentating legend, Northeast Ohio’s sports scene will gather for a night of networking, libations, appearances from local and national sports celebrities and feature a live awards show mirrored on the venue’s big screen.

 

Recipients of additional awards for 24th Greater Cleveland Sports Awards are as follows:

 

Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine Courage Award – Olivia Slivinski, Avon Lake High School, Competitive Swimming

 

Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Union Home Mortgage – Renee Powell, Women’s Golf Trailblazer

 

Sports Development Award – TBA

 

Senior Athlete Award presented by Medical Mutual – TBA

 

Best Moment in Cleveland Sports presented by JACK Entertainment – TBA
