Division III State Semifinals: Waynedale, Edison Set to Square Off in Championship

OHSAA Baseball State Tournament

Akron, Ohio

The Waynedale Golden Bears roughed up one of the top prospects in the country and the Edison Chargers won in extra innings to advance to Saturday’s 1 pm championship game at Canal Park in Akron.

Waynedale 4 Liberty Union 3

When senior Jacob Miller takes the mound for Liberty Union, they win. Miller is the #44 prospect in this year’s MLB Draft, according to MLB.com. The Louisville commit entered Thursday afternoon’s state semifinal contest with a spotless 29-0 career record. Waynedale, winners of 23 straight coming into the game, had other ideas.

The Golden Bears got hits off of Miller in each of the first three innings, but the Lions ace was able to escape without damage each time. In the 4th inning, however, senior Jay Mast reached base via walk. One batter later, junior Timmy Short hit a triple down the right field line, scoring Mast. Short later scored on a wild pitch and Waynedale went up 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, the Lions got on the board when Miller hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Cayden Carroll.

The Bears would get two more in the top of the 5th with Trey Barkman and Josiah Raber crossing the plate. The Lions had a chance to get out of the inning unscathed. But a throwing error scored Barkman and kept the bases loaded. Junior Austin McClure led off the home half of the inning for Liberty Union. He would later score, making it 4-2 heading to the 6th.

Both teams went quietly in the 6th inning, Despite two singles, Waynedale was unable to push a run across. Thus, keeping the lead at 4-2. The Lions had a chance in the 7th, Brayden Shreyer reached first on an error. Then Trevor Wood was hit with a pitch. That was enough to chase Barkman from the game. Bringing in Otto Solorzano. He made a nifty play fielding a bunt and getting the lead runner at 3rd. Making the first out of the inning. Carroll hit an RBI single, scoring McClure, but Solorzano got John Edwards swinging to end the game.

Miller ended up going 5.1 innings giving up two earned runs, four hits, and five walks while striking out 10. Barkman went six innings for the Bears, giving up one earned run, two hits, and two walks, fanning  seven. Josiah Raber was on fire from the two-spot going 3-3 for Waynedale. Cayden Carroll went 2-4 with a double and an RBI for the Lions (25-6).

Edison 3 Roger Bacon 0 (8 innings)

The nightcap of Thursday’s action saw the Edison Chargers take on the Roger Bacon Spartans. Fans in attendance were treated to a nail biter, as the Chargers scored three in the top of the 8th to take down the Spartans 3-0.

The starting pitching on both sides was dominant. Thomas Simon went seven innings giving up five hit and two walks while striking out 10 Spartans. For Roger Bacon, Jake Tschida went 5.2 inning giving up 2 hits and six walks while striking out 12.

The teams remained knotted at zero up until the 8th, when Edison would finally strike. Junior Hayden Fry led off the frame with a single. The next batter, Noah Smith, would reach base on an error after attempting a sacrifice to move Fry up to 2nd. Both runners moved up and, after a walk, the bases were loaded for senior Bryce Michaelis. Michaelis snuck a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Fry. A fielder’s choice and throwing error on the next batter brought home two more. This gave Edison a 3-0 lead that would hold until the end.
