Comets win Sectional Baseball!

Comets Soar Past Orrville 10-1

The Coventry (13-9) bats came out of the gate hot, scoring three first-inning runs en route to a sectional championship win over Orrville (15-8) 10-1 Wednesday evening. Senior pitcher Brayden Clark pitched a complete game gem allowing just three hits in the game and set the school record for strikeouts with 105.

Comets First Inning success!

After Jonny Clemente drew a four-pitch walk to open the home half of the first, the Comets got singles from Clark and Jack Holderbaum to load the bases with one out. Singles from Luke Futrell and Chase Rankin, along with a walk from Chase Taylor, drove in all three runs to give Coventry a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the third, AJ Hills drew a one-out walk to give Orrville their second base runner of the game. After a sacrifice bunt from Kellen Wayt, junior Brady Marshall hit his second single of the game, driving home Hills and pulling the Red Riders closer at 3-1.

A Fifth to remember!

Both teams saw runners reach base in the fourth, but it was the fifth inning when the Comets’ offense exploded. Walks to Clark and Eric Hennon, and a single from Holderbaum loaded the bases with no outs. After an RBI groundout from Futrell, Rankin laced a double into the outfield, plating two more runs. Rankin would come around to score on a Hunter Knisley single to put Coventry up 7-1 after five.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Hennon blasted a homerun to deep left to extend the Comets’ lead to 8-1. Walks to Holderbaum, Rankin, and Taylor loaded the bases before Knisley came through with a big two-run single to put Coventry up 10-1. Kaleb Wayt would reach base via walk in the seventh for Orrville, but Taylor was able to retire the side for a complete game victory.

Sectional Champs!

The win gives the Comets a sectional championship and they will look to continue their run Monday when they travel to North Ridgeville to take on Elyria Catholic (15-3). Though the Red Riders loss ended their postseason run, they will head to Northwest on Thursday to take on the Indians.
