Buckeye Defeats Black River, 28-12

By: Michael Rodgers
SULLIVAN, OHIO– It was a beautiful night in Sullivan, Ohio for a Friday night football game. The Black River Pirates hosted The Buckeye Bucks for their homecoming game. Both teams entered tonight’s game with a three-way tie with The Firelands Falcons at 6-0, 1-0 in The Patriots-Star League.

Black River opened the game with the ball and senior running backs Jake Campbell, Travis Sexton, and Riley Gibbs pounded the ball down the field.

Campbell had the biggest impact with an early 18-yard run and a five-yard touchdown run to finish off the opening drive. The extra point was blocked by Buckeye making the score 6-0 Black River with 5:58 left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, it was evident we were in for an old-school, smash-mouth game. Both teams were run dominant early and often. After some sloppy play from both sides, Buckeye got things going with a five-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Dominic Monaco and went up 7-6 with 11:56 left in the second.

The biggest play of the game came with 1:22 left in the half when Black River running back Riley Gibbs fumbled inside the 10-yard line, which was recovered by Sr. Turner Mitchell. The Bucks took 7-6 halftime lead.

When the second half started The Bucks came out energized. Senior Jonathon Neel took the opening kickoff 21 yards, followed by a 21-yard run by Monaco and the drive was capped off by a 36-yard touchdown swing pass to senior receiver Justin Canedy from junior quarterback Michael Knoll.

The Bucks went up 14-6 and went on to dominate the rest of the game. After stopping Black River on the next possession, Buckeye scored on their next drive after Adam Fauver had a 21-yard sprint to the end zone. Senior Dom Kriz of Buckeye then intercepted Black River quarterback Bartolic. Fauver went on to score his second touchdown of the game with a five-yard run to put the Bucks up, 28-12, which ended up being the final score.

Buckeye improves to 7-0, 2-0 in the Patriot-Star League and will face Firelands next week. That game is anticipated to be a battle for first place. Black River falls to 6-1, 1-1 and will face Brookside next Friday.
