Browns 5 Most All-Time Most Memorable Wins Against the Raiders

Eric Metcalf rushes

4. Browns 28, Raiders 16, Sept. 20, 1992 at Los Angeles:

With Kosar sidelined by a fractured ankle, third-year pro Philcox made his first NFL start. It would be his only start until more than a year later, when he temporarily took over after Kosar’s release and Testaverde’s shoulder injury.

Metcalf scored all four Browns touchdowns, first on a 4-yard pass from Philcox and then on a 6-yard run. Then, Metcalf hauled in a long Philcox throw for a 69-yard score, and broke a medium-length route into a 63-yard touchdown. Metcalf finished with five catches for 177 yards.

Philcox was 10-of-20 for 200 yards and didn’t throw an interception as the Browns became 1-2 on the season. Philcox finished the game despite injuring his right (throwing) thumb in the first half. It turned out to be a fracture, making him unavailable for nearly two months.

Mike Tomczak started the next eight games at quarterback, with the Browns winning four. Kosar returned to start the final five games. Cleveland won the first two to move to the edge of playoff contention at 7-6, but lost its final three games.

The Raiders were 0-3 after losing to the Browns and also finished 7-9.
