Avon Beats Medina 43-42 in Game of The Year, Medina’s Stoddard throws 620 a Northeast Ohio All-time Record, Avon’s Caffey runs for 298

The Avon Eagles ran behind junior running back Javorion Caffey’s 298 yards and 3 TD and held off the Medina Bees and junior quarterback Dan Stoddard’s school-record 620 yards and 6 TD in a wild thriller on Friday night in Avon.

Avon’s Caffey dominated the 4th quarter, busting off 25- and 47-yard touchdown runs, the last of which came with 1:06 left and game tied at 36. On the ensuing drive, Medina’s Stoddard engineered a beautiful drive which ended in an Austin Knowles 61-yard touchdown reception with 35 seconds left. However, Stoddard failed to convert the ensuing 2-point conversion, which led to Avon pulling away with the victory 43-42.

Caffey was not alone in his rushing attack, as senior running back Gavin Ehrhardt added 87 yards and 3 TD of his own.

Stoddard was a dynamo, a passing display the likes of which has hardly been seen in Northeast Ohio. The junior quarterback threw for 620 yards, 6 touchdowns, and no interceptions. Medina threw 50 passes and did not feature a single play with a running back in the backfield, however they continually ran bubble screens which were effectively running plays.

Aiding Stoddard were receivers senior Brennen Schramm (302 yards), junior Austin Knowles (153 yards), and junior Jack Wojciak (125 yards). Schramm had two 90-yard+ touchdown receptions, as the Eagles defenders had no answer for the after-the-catch abilities of the Bees’ receivers.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team ever had a lead larger than Medina’s 23-14 third quarter lead. It was a true shootout, the air attack of the Bees against the ground attack of the Eagles. And ultimately, the rushing attack of the Avon Eagles was too much for the Medina Bees.

Next week, Avon hosts Glenville while Medina travels to Wadsworth.
