A Look at the Week Ahead for Cleveland State Sports Teams

A LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING

MEN’S GOLF
•    The Vikings return to action at the Wright State Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (April 4-5).
•    CSU captured the Villanova Wildcat Invitational last week, carding a first round 302 and a final round 291, coming back from 13 strokes back to claim the title.
•    It was CSU’s first title since winning the League Championship last year in Florida and the first in-season title since the Vikings won the John Piper Intercollegiate from Sept. 17-18, 2012, in Bowling Green.
•    The Vikings have one of the most balanced teams in CSU history from top to bottom. Joey Krecic leads the Viking five with a 73.2 scoring average, while Blake Prince is close behind at 73.6. Paul Minko averages 74.9, while Pat Luth (75.3) and Mitchell Moore (75.5) round out the CSU lineup.

WOMEN’S GOLF
•    The Vikings play their final regular season event of the year on Saturday and Sunday (April 9-10) at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green.
•    CSU finished 10th at the EKU Colonel Classic last week as Sophie Kelner paced the Vikings, tying for 32nd place, while Rayna Oosterhuis tied for 40th place.

SOFTBALL
•    CSU (8-20, 1-2 HL) travels to Wright State for a three-game League series this weekend, playing a single game on Friday (April 8) and a doubleheader on Saturday (April 9).
•    The Vikings went 1-4 last week, dropping a pair of close games to Akron and falling two of three times to UIC in the opening series of Horizon League play.
•    CSU won the middle game of the series vs UIC, earning a 9-8 victory in the middle game of the series. Riley Ries hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and Erica McNew delivered the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning.
•    McNew leads the Vikings with a .447 average, ranking second in the Horizon League. She is also tied for third in home runs (5) and fifth in runs batted in (24).

MEN’S TENNIS
•    Cleveland State (11-7, 1-1 HL) will continue Horizon League play at home this weekend, hosting Youngstown State in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8.
•    CSU picked up its first league win of the season, battling for a 4-3 victory at Detroit, on Sunday.
•    Along with the doubles point, Cleveland State also got points from Colton Buffington (No. 3 singles), Kevin Goth (No. 4), and Andre Mick (No. 6) to pick up the win against the Titans.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
•    Cleveland State (8-7, 4-0 HL) hosts a trio of matches in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion this week.
•    On Friday (April 8) the Vikings host League opponent Youngstown State, and will then take a break from League play on Saturday (April 9) when they host IUPUI and Oberlin.
•    Entering the weekend the Vikings are undefeated in Horizon League action after picking up a 6-1 victory at Oakland and a 4-3 win at Detroit last weekend.
•    Senior Mathilde Orangewent 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, becoming the 12th player in program history to reach 50 career singles wins.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Blake Prince, Men’s Golf, Sophomore, East Liverpool, Ohio

Prince helped the Vikings claim the Villanova Wildcat Invitational title last week. He was CSU’s top finisher at the event, tying for third in the 113 player field with rounds of 72-74 (146), finishing just three shots behind the medalist and one shot behind the runner-up. He helped the Vikings overcome a 13 stroke deficit after the first round and claim the title by six shots.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS

Mitchell Moore: The men’s golf senior shot a final round even-par 71 at the Wildcat Invitational, helping CSU rally from 13 strokes down to win the title.

Mathilde Orange: The women’s tennis senior was 2-0 at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles last week, helping CSU to wins at Oakland at Detroit.

Riley Ries: The softball freshman hit a grand slam in CSU’s win over UIC on Friday. It was her second career homer – both are grand slams.
