Three Takeaways From UFC New Zealand

The UFC Heavyweight Division Is Top Heavy!

Mark Hunt and Derrick Lewis both showed why neither man should be anywhere near the UFC Heavyweight Title picture with a horrific effort. Neither man showed any finesse, endurance or just overall MMA excellence.  It was a slow moving, heavy breathing slugfest.  Well, kind of, you would need both guys to land punches for it to be  slugfest.  Never the less, following the Stipe dominance over the division over the last year, there’s not much left.  Stipe has knocked out all 5 of his opponents in the last 18 months by first round knockout.  With victories over Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Alistiar Overreem and most recently, Junior dos Santos.  Going back even before that, he knocked out Mark Hunt.

Who is left? Well, it is not Derrick Lewis like some hoped, and at just two wins over 500, it certainly isn’t Hunt.  The answer is clear, and now it is only a matter of time to see if it happens.  Fabricio Werdum deserves his rematch for the belt.  It is strange that it hasn’t happened already.  If not Werdum, then why not give Cain Velasquez a shot?  Few will argue that the two time champion (Velasquez) isn’t one of the best in the sport.  It truly is time for new stars to rise in this division before Stipe completely cleans it out!
