Three Takeaways From UFC New Zealand

AUCKLAND, New Zealand – It was a fast paced and hard hitting night from down under Saturday evening for the UFC as they traveled to New Zealand. The card featured several knockouts, and in the end, it was the hometown Hero Mark Hunt sending everyone home happy with a fourth round knockout of the out of shape and sloppy Derrick Lewis.

We observed three big takeaways from the historic event.

Fighters should not be interviewed after they have been knocked out

This one goes all the way back to UFC 203 in Cleveland when Alistair Overeem gave a bizarre interview after being stopped by Stipe Miocic seconds earlier. He talked nonsensical and made claims that clearly did not exist.

It was after that fight that Joe Rogan agreed to stop interviewing fighters who had just been knocked out. The only problem with that was the fact that Rogan was not in attendance on Saturday evening as he misses most if not all over see’s shows now.

An emotional and banged up Derrick Lewis, who isn’t exactly a road scholar to begin with, made the off the cuff remark that because he is getting married, he will now retire? He was coming off of a 6 fight win streak over some big names just before this crushing loss.  Again, you can’t take much stock into anything this buffoon says.  He recently and quite avidly verbally pronounced just how much he wants to have sex with Ronda Rousey.  This from a guy who in his next breath states that he will retire from MMA because he wants to be around his new bride more often?  What a buffoon!  Lewis routinely comes across as rude, and a horrible ambassador for the sport. Couple that fact that in his last post fight interview, after not being knocked out allowed him to state how badly he needed to have a “bowel movement”, and the UFC had no reason to stick a mike in this goof’s face fresh off of a knockout.  If he sounds horrible when he is not hurt, why would you allow him to speak after just getting knocked loopy?
