Rushing Attack lifts Glenville over Avon 27-21

Glenville (3-0) ran for 225 yards and held Avon star running back Jakorion Caffey to 41 yards rushing as the Tarblooders held off the Avon Eagles (2-1) 27-21 on Friday night in Avon.

With the game tied at 21 midway through the 4th quarter, Glenville senior running back J’Vaughn Goodson busted two 22-yard runs to get the ball into the red zone. A clutch 17-yard pass over the middle from senior quarterback Deonte Rucker to junior tight end Damorion Witten set things up for Goodson to finish the drive with a 3-yard touchdown, putting the Tarblooders up 6 with 5 minutes remaining.

On the next drive, Avon got the ball all the way down to the Tarblooder 25 yard-line, behind a heroic 36-yard scramble by quarterback Sam DeTillio. With 45 seconds remaining, down 6, 3rd and 10 at the Glenville 25, DeTillio dropped back and was hit as he threw, throwing an interception to Glenville junior linebacker Jermaine Agee that sealed the game for the Tarblooders.

The game was filled with penalties from both teams. Glenville had a 43-yard TD pass called back in the 3rd quarter, while two Avon drives were stalled in Tarblooder territory due to unsportsmanlike conduct and holding penalties.

However, the Tarblooder defense stepped up and held the Eagles to 7 points in the 2nd half after Avon put up 28 second-half points against Medina last week. Glenville held Avon running back Jakorion Caffey to 2.7 yards per carry after he torched Medina for over 10 yards per carry last week. Perhaps in response, Avon changed game plans, throwing the ball 32 times against 31 rushes, compared to 12 passes and 40 rushes against Medina.

The game started hot, with three touchdowns in the first 9 minutes, capped off by a 33-yard touchdown run by senior running back D’Shawntae Jones, who ran for 117 yards on 11 carries on Friday night.

Next week, Glenville (3-0) begins their Senate League slate at home against John Marshall. Avon travels to rival Avon Lake in a key matchup on Friday night.
