Northeast Ohio Baseball Playoff District Previews: Division I

Lorain District

Favorites #1 Amherst, #2 Avon

Contenders #3 Berea-Midpark, #4 Midview, #5 Elyria, #7 Olmsted Falls

Sleeper #6 Avon Lake

All signs appear to be pointing toward a district final between #1 Amherst and #2 Avon.

The two teams split their regular season meetings and were neck and neck in the Southwestern Conference race all season.

However, this is a talented district, which basically includes the entire SWC plus a good Elyria team.

Berea-Midpark was right there in the hunt with Amherst and Avon for much of the season and the Titans (12-6-1) earned several impressive wins, defeating Amherst 2-0, sweeping #4 Midview, and going 11-4 in SWC play in a conference that is filled with solid teams.

A few teams worth mentioning are North Olmsted, Westlake and Lorain. The North Olmsted-Westlake game could go down to the wire. The winner has the unenviable task of matching up with Amherst and it would be quite an upset if either team de-railed the Comets’ hopes.

Lorain has a high-powered offense so their first round game against Olmsted Falls could be interesting. However, #7 Olmsted Falls matches up with #2 Avon better than a lot of teams in this district can.

Even as the seven seed, the Bulldogs are a team to watch and if they do meet up with Avon, they should give the Eagles everything they can handle.

#6 Avon Lake has a chance to make a deep run in this tournament. The Shoremen stunned St. Ignatius, 10-0, at Progressive Field, but as a whole, 2017 was inconsistent.

The 4 v 5 Midview-Elyria game should make for some highly competitive baseball and whichever team wins could present a formidable challenge to Amherst in the semifinal.

At the end of the day, Amherst has the most talented pitching rotation in this district, in this region, and possibly even the state.

Avon has shown they can overcome that, so this will be one of the more intriguing districts to follow.

Head to the Lorain Pipe Yard on the 17th and 18th for some great baseball.
