Cleveland- Amed Rosario will head to the Dodgers in a trade announced Wednesday evening. The Guardians will in turn receive pitcher Noah Syndergaard. Rosario was acquired in part of a 4-player package that sent Francisco Lindor to the Mets in 2021. The shortstop has had an up and down season. He never quite filled the shoes of a true major league short stop however he brought speed to the base paths. Rosario was also a clubhouse favorite.
There are several options to replace Rosario in the infield. Tyler Freeman and Gabriel Arias both are on the team’s major league roster. Brayan Rocchio is one of Cleveland’s top prospects yet he’s in Triple-A and it may be some time til he gets his shot in the bigs.
It’s no secret that the Guardians rotation has been riddled with injuries. Rookies Gavin Williams, Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee have handled much of the workload during the loss of Triston McKenzie, Shane Bieber and Cal Quantrill. The trade for Syndergaard may help the team eat up some much needed innings. Syndergaard has been sidelined with a blister issue. He will join Cleveland for their series in Chicago on Thursday on the IL. The Guardians medical team plan to evaluate Syndergaard and their hope is to get him up and going soon.
Oscar Gonzalez – aka “Spongebob” – will fill Rosario’s roster spot for now. He’s slashing 288/.325/.494 in the minors this season. Gonzalez showed he could come up clutch in the postseason last year. The Guardians could use a bolster to their offense.
