Gilmour Academy Attacked Early & Never Looked Back, Winning over Toledo Central Catholic in Regional Semifinals

March 10, 2022 – Bowling Green

A fast start and a 37-point second half, propelled Gilmour Academy to a 65-54 victory over Toledo Central Catholic, on Thursday evening in a Regional Semifinal at Bowling Green State University. With the win, the Lancers advance to the championship game on Saturday against St Mary’s Memorial at 4 pm.

Gilmour came out of the gate with a 12-0 run to start the game. They still led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter. Nathan Flaherty, Dorjan Flowers, and Lucas Grover all made 3-pointers to spur that run.

The lead was still 27-15 late in the half when the Irish hit back-to-back 3-pointers to narrow the gap to 27-21. A Zach Titus free throw pushed the lead to 28-21 at the half. Gilmour built on that led. Thus holding leading scorer Ryan Mueller scoreless. Mueller was also saddled with three first half fouls.

The Lancers continued to build their lead in the third period. Central scored the first basket of the half, but that was as close as they would get. Flaherty would drill a three, and Mueller scored inside to push the lead to 33-23. Gilmour would then go 7-7 from the free throw line in the quarter to maintain the lead. It was 48-39 after three.

Flaherty would hit another three to start the final period, and when Mueller hit a free throw, the Lancers had their largest advantage of the night at 52-39. Nathan Nootbaar then scored twice inside, as they would push the lead to as many as 16. From there Gilmour would make enough free throws to hold off the Irish.

Scoring balance and torrid shooting were key for the Lancers. Once again, Brandon Rose led the way with 16 while Flaherty had 12. Mueller and Molton added 9 apiece and Flowers chipped in with eight. Meanwhile Gilmour was 21-34 from the floor for a sizzling .62%. Chico Johnson, the Northwest Ohio Division II Player of the Year led Central Catholic with 16 points.
