Boys HS Hoops: Lakewood Rallies To Stun Midview 50-43 In Overtime Thriller, Advance To Districts

GRAFTON, OHIO – Coming into Saturday night’s sectional final game, Midview had won 14 of their last 15. Their only blemish in that 15 game stretch? An overtime loss to Lakewood.

There is an old saying that goes “lightning can’t strike the same place twice”. However, that’s exactly what happened, as Lakewood went on to shock Midview in overtime for the second time this season.

Lakewood started off red hot, namely Peter Patsouras. Patsouras scored the first 10 points of the game for his Rangers, giving them a 10-4 lead midway through the first quarter.

Midview was able to trim the lead to 10-9 heading into the second quarter, thanks to five points by Marcell Young.

After trailing by six in the first quarter, Midview went on an 11-0 run to gain a 15-10 lead. Lakewood went about eight minutes without scoring, a stretch that spanned across two quarters.

Stellar defense and a solid third quarter performance by Aden Gregory propelled them to a 20-15 halftime lead.

Lakewood’s offense continued its major struggles to begin the third quarter. Midview started the frame on a 7-0 run, building their largest lead of the game at 27-15.

It was not looking good for the Rangers, but Patsouras and his offense began to click.

Lakewood responded with a 7-0 run of their own to trim the deficit back to five. A buzzer beater by Midview’s Tyler Dawson made the score 32-25 going into the fourth quarter.

Patsouras, who finished with a game high 24 points, continued to inject life into this Ranger squad. They went on a 10-3 run to start the fourth quarter, tying the game on a fast break bucket by Patsouras.

Patsouras continued to have an incredible offensive game despite the overall lack of offense in this contest. He buried a monumental corner three to tie the game 41-41 with 37.8 in regulation.

With 3.8 in regulation, Lakewood was inbounding from the baseline. The pass was stolen by Aden Gregory, who went on to hit a “game winning” mid range shot. However, he stepped out of bounds before taking the shot, and the official waved off the score.

For the second time this season, Lakewood and Midview were heading to overtime.

Lakewood had stunned Midview in overtime back in January, which would be their only loss so far in the new year.

The Rangers knew what had to be done.

They outscored the Middies 9-2 in the overtime period, backed by a pair of three pointers from Riley Ulintz. Midview was able to get their looks in overtime, but they just weren’t able to connect.

Lakewood fans travel well, and their near capacity visiting bleachers erupted at the final buzzer. Lakewood is district bound after rallying from a 12 point deficit to defeat Midview 50-43.

Midview ends their season with a record of 19-4. Lakewood improves to 14-8, and will face 11th-seeded Elyria on Thursday at Elyria Catholic.
