Beachwood – Under the leadership of Head Track and Field Coach Willie Smith, it has become common for Beachwood Bison athletes to finish on top of the podium.

And on Thursday at the CVC championships for the Valley Division, not only did  Beachwood win many individual events, both the Bison Girls and Boys Track and Field teams won CVC Valley Division Titles.

“We have never won both titles (boys and girls) on the same day,” said Beachwood Head Track and Field Coach Willie Smith. “We are really ecstatic. We had to battle with one of our top performers not being able to compete and the girls really dug deep. Every point was critical.  We won by one point. We as a coaching staff, community, athletic director, are so excited to get this double win.”

As coach Smith noted, the Bison girls won by one point defeating Kirtland, 126-125. In finishing first, the Bison girls team won five events. Madison Torbert won the shot put and discus, while Dakota Houston won the long jump.

Also, Kylie Walters won the 100m hurdles and Shasha Kheyfets won the 1600m.

“It’s all about whoever is in front of you,” said Kheyfets. “It’s a lot easier to keep with them and then just kick it in at the last lap. My number one strategy is probably tailing and then kicking.”

In addition to the Bison girls track and field team winning five events, the Beachwood boys won seven events and claimed the title by scoring 184 points. Winning field events for the Bison boys team was Josh Rosenberg, who won the shot put and discus.

“I worked really hard in the off season,” said Rosenberg.  “I’m really happy to start off the post season with those two wins. I had a season’s best in the shot put. In discus, I pr’d by seven feet, 137.”

In the running events, David Steckner (400m), Michael Kesselman (300m hurdles), and Vince Crenshaw (800m) won individual titles.
