HS Football Preview: Brecksville-Broadview Heights Has Sights Set on 5-0 As They Look To Tame Twinsburg

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS-The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees (4-0, 1-0 in the Suburban League) look to win their fifth straight game as they take on the Twinsburg Tigers (1-3, 1-0 in the Suburban League) in Suburban League play this Friday at The Bee Hive at 7pm.

Both teams are fresh off victories last Friday to start league play, as Brecksville cruised to victory at Cuyahoga Falls, 41-7, and Twinsburg eeked out a victory on the road against the North Royalton Bears, 28-27. Brecksville had no trouble disposing of Tigers from Cuyahoga Falls, as Brecksville lead 27-0 at the end of the first half, and 41-0 after three quarters. The Bees were again led by Senior QB Luke Strnad, who completed 16 of 23 passes, for 249 and 3 touchdowns.

Junior wide receiver Sam Wiglusz led the Bees receiving core, with 7 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Joey McGonegal and Senior Tight End Victor Bierman also caught touchdown passes in the victory. Junior runningback Alec Buckley continued to help the Bees balance out their prolific passing attack, as he carried the ball 8 times for 62 yards, and added two more TD’s. Junior runningback Jordan Shaheen also chipped in with another 53 yards on 4 carries and a touchdown.

Twinsburg won a hard-fought game against North Royalton last Friday, 28-27. Twinsburg opened the scoring with Sophomore QB Adam Van De Motter finding fellow sophomore wide receiver Tre Radford for the TD, giving the Tigers and early 7-0 lead. North Royalton’s Junior cornerback/kick returner Eddie Pfister returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to pay dirt, to tie the score up at 7. After scores by both teams, the score was tied 14-14 at halftime.

Twinsburg’s Junior wide receiver Christian Edgerson pushed the Twinsburg lead to 28-14 after scoring on a 48 yard touchdown run, and then following it up on the next drive, catching a 21 yard pass from Van De Motter for another trip to the end zone. North Royalton’s Bears roared back, however, on the strength of 2 straight touchdowns of their own, with Junior wide receiver Tyler Knurek catching a 44 yard pass from Freshman QB Joe Marousek, and Junior running back Domenic Carriero running it in from 9 yards out, to inch the Bears to within 1 point, at 28-27.

The point after was unsuccessful. The Tigers were able to hold on to keep North Royalton off the board in the 4th quarter to win their first game of the season, and to open up Suburban League play at 1-0.

The Tigers were led by Adam Van De Motter’s 10 of 19 passing, for 183 yards and 3 touchdown passes. Wider receiver had 106 yards rushing on 2 touchdowns on just 3 carries, and also caught 3 passes for another 42 yards. Twinsburg’s Tre Radford lead the Tigers with 5 catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.

In order for Twinsburg to be able to pull off the upset against Brecksville (ranked 4th in the latest OHSAA playoff computer points rankings in Region 5), the Tigers must try and contain Brecksville’s Senior QB Luke Strnad, who on the year has completed 59% of his passes for 959 yards with 13 touchdown passes, and no interceptions.

Junior runningback Jordan Shaheen leads the Bees kick returners, with an average of nearly 32 per return. On offense, the Tigers will have to contend with Brecksville Junior middle linebacker Michael Graham, who on the year, has 38 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 interceptions. Hard-hitting strong safety, Junior Michael Rose, leads the Bees with 10 solo tackles, along with 15 assists and 2 interceptions of his own. Brecksville will be facing a team that runs a similar spread offense in Twinsburg, led by their versatile QB Adam Van De Motter.

Twinsburg also has a big play wide receiver in Chrisitan Edgerson the Bees will need to contend with. In last week’s game against North Royalton, Edgerson averaged 35 yards per rush, in addition to 14 yards per reception. Twinsburg’s 1-3 record is rather deceiving, because they have played three extremely tough teams to start their season, in Copley, Solon, and Aurora, which all made the playoffs last year.

The young Bees need to aware that this team has gone against some of the better teams in Northeast Ohio, and must not take the young Tigers lightly.

Prediction:

Brecksville 34, Twinsburg 21.
