Northeast Ohio Sports Insiders Week 2 High School Football Preview

Well it is not even Labor Day yet and we will have played three weeks of high school football here in Northeast Ohio before the holiday.

During week one of the High School Football season our NEOSI team provided high school football coverage around Northeast Ohio.

Mark “Munch” Bishop was at the Walsh Jesuit vs Benedictine JV football game and then attended the Bay vs. Cleveland Central Catholic Varsity football game on Saturday afternoon.

 

This week, Munch will be covering John Marshall at Rocky River on Friday.  Rocky River is currently ranked 6th in Region 10.

Rocky River is led by quarterback Julian Patti who threw for 421 yards and five touchdowns in Rocky River’s 55-42 victory over Harvey. 

In addition, Rocky River’s offense is led by running back Nick DiSalvo who ran for 186 yards and three touchdowns against Harvey.

Our NEOSI High School Sports Editor Jayson Richardson will be covering the Benedictine vs. Avon Lake Game on Thursday night. 

Avon Lake is 1-0 on the season and tied with Avon and Lakewood for the top ranking in Region 6.

Avon Lake defeated Strongsville 19-14 in week one while Benedictine lost to a very good Walsh Jesuit team, 49-26.

On Saturday afternoon, Jayson will be covering Cleveland Heights as they host Paramus Catholic from New Jersey.  

Cleveland Heights, currently ranked first in Region One (tied with Glen Oak, Medina, Mentor, and St. Edward) won 46-21 over Berea Midpark in week one.  

NEOSI writer James Ellifritz was at the Massillon vs. Valdosta, Georgia game last week.  

Massillon had an amazing comeback last week as they defeated Valdosta, 28-17. 

Massillon is currently ranked first in Region 7.

 

This week James will be covering the Mayfield vs. Jackson game. Mayfield defeated Shaw 58-0 in week one while Jackson lost to Mentor 26-21.  

During week one, I was at the Orange vs. Beachwood game on Friday and at the St. Edward vs. Center Grove game on Saturday. 

Orange and St. Edward both were dominant in their week one games.

This week I will be covering Beachwood vs. Chagrin Falls on Friday. Then on Sunday, I will be covering St. Edward vs. Our Lady of Good Counsel. 

St. Edward is currently ranked first in Region 1 (tied with Cleveland Heights, Glen Oak, Medina, and Mentor).

The St. Edward game will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Games and Players to Watch During Week 2

In addition to the games we will be at, our NEOSI staff has looked at the week ahead and has chosen some games and players that we recommend following.

Region I ( OHSAA Division I)

Glen Oak vs. Massillon – Both teams come into the contest undefeated.

Mentor will host St. Ignatius on Friday night. Ignatius is coming off of a 27-11 loss to Springfield.

The Mentor vs. St. Ignatius game will be televised on Spectrum One.

Region 5 (OHSAA Division II)

Hudson (1-0) will play Hoover (1-0).  Hudson defeated Highland 35-21 while Hoover won 27-21 over Buchtel.

Last week Hudson’s, Ludewig, had five touchdowns and ran for 182 yards.

Region Six (OHSAA Division II)

Top ranked Avon goes up against Canton McKinley on Friday.  Both teams won their first game.

Region 9 (OHSAA Division III)

Here are a few of the great games that we will be watching in Division III.

Hawken will play Trinity.  Players to watch for Hawken include running backs Jordan Johnson and Luke Mangini.

Kenston plays West Geauga on Friday.

Kenston’s Sean Patrick had 221 yards last week in Kenston’s victory.

Region 10 (Division III)

Lutheran West, ranked second in region 10, will travel to Lake County to take on perennial Division VI power, the Kirtland Hornets.  

Although a Division 6 school, Kirtland has been one of the top Northeast Ohio football teams for the past two decades under the leadership of head coach Tiger LaVerde.

Region 13 (OHSAA Division IV)

Top ranked Lutheran East will face Garfield Heights in a Friday home game which starts at 4pm.

Also, Streetsboro ranked second in Region 13, will play Normandy.  

Last week, Streetsboro’s Preston Hopperton ran for 218 yards in Streetsboro’s 36-22 victory over CVCA.

Region 14 ( OHSAA Division IV)

Top ranked Glenville will travel to Olentangy Liberty on Friday.  

Glenville defeated Dinwiddie, Virginia 36-13.

Region 17 (OHSAA Division V)

Top ranked Perry will take on Harvey on Friday night.  

Perry defeated Madison 32-7 in week one.

Region 21 (OHSAA Division VI)

Top ranked Mogadore will face Ravenna in week two.  

Mogadore shutout Field, 34-0 in week one.

Also, Rootstown, who defeated Crestwood 42-30 last week, will face Champion on Friday night.  

Last week, Rootstown’s senior running back Dawson Morgan ran for 301 yards in the victory.

Region 25 (OHSAA Division VII)

Top ranked Warren JFK will face Garrettsville Garfield on Friday.

Warren JFK defeated Champion 26-7 in week one.
