Indians Carlos Santana Selected as the American League 1B Starter for the All-Star Game

Indians fans will have something to cheer for during the intros to the All-Star game in Cleveland on July 9th, as first basemen Carlos Santana has been voted in as the starter for the American League at first base.

“I’m excited to represent Cleveland alongside the best in Major League Baseball,” said Santana.

“To be able to start in my first career All-Star Game, and to do it at home in front of our fans, means everything to me.”

Santana won the AL first base vote with 49.2 percent. He beat out New York Yankees first basemen Luke Voit (25.8 percent) and Twins C.J. Cron (25.0 percent).

Entering the day, Santana had the best 2019 numbers among AL first baseman finalists leading in average (.290) home runs (18), on-base pct. (.411), slugging pct. (.541) and OPS (.951).

The native of the Dominican Republic finished second in the Primary Election process, receiving 1,180,719 votes. He finished behind Voit (1,205,706 votes) and ahead of Cron (1,045,120 votes).

The last Indian to start at first base for the American League was Jim Thome back in 1999.

The Tribe has now boasted an American League starter in three straight All-Star Games as Jose Ramriez got the nod at third base in 2017 and 2018.

A former Indian got the nod as a starter in the outfield for the American League, as Michael Brantley was voted as a starter by the fans.

The now Houston Astros outfielder will make his first appearance at Progressive Field July 9th since inking with Houston this past offseason.
