Division IV Canton Regional: Dalton, Richmond Heights Advance to Friday’s Finals

Dalton dispatched Colonel Crawford 51-46 and Richmond Heights blew past Cornerstone Christian 93-52, setting up Friday night’s Regional Championship. The Bulldogs and Spartans are set to meet up Friday with a trip to State on the line at 7 pm.

The Eagles hung tough all game long, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for a 51-46 victory to punch their ticket to Friday night’s final. Dalton jumped out to a quick 15-5 lead in the first quarter, but the Eagles came storming back to make it a 23-21 game at the half.

The third quarter was even tighter and Jacob Maddy was cooking, dominating in the low-post and bringing the Eagles within one after three, trailing the Bulldogs 37-36. The fourth quarter was especially tight, as Derek Horsley knocked in a three pointer to give Colonel Crawford a 44-43 lead with just over four minutes to go. The Dalton defense allowed just two free throws as they held on for a 51-46 win.

The Bulldogs got a big game out of star Braylon Wenger, who finished with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Senior Jack Steiner also had a big game for Dalton with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. For the Eagles, seniors Jacob Maddy and Braxton Baker each scored 16 points in the final game of their high school careers.

Richmond Heights 93 Cornerstone Christian Academy 52

The Patriots kept themselves in the game in the first half, but Richmond Heights outscored them 56-21 in the second half to walk away with a 93-52 victory over Cornerstone Christian. After jumping out to a big 22-8 lead after one, the Spartans allowed the Patriots to creep back into the game, holding a 37-31 lead at halftime.

Richmond Heights came out of the break on fire, outscoring Cornerstone 38-12 in the third and holding a commanding 75-43 lead heading into the fourth. Unfortunately for the Patriots, the fourth quarter turned into a Spartans highlight reel as Richmond Heights threw down multiple dunks and were on fire from three. When all was said and done, the Spartans walked away with a 93-52 victory. 

Richmond Heights defense kept the pressure turned up all night long, forcing Cornerstone into 28 turnovers. Three Spartans scored 20+ points in the game with Jeremy Wilson finishing with 26, Demmarris Winters with 22, and Dorian Jones with 20. Wilson also added five steals on the evening. Sophomore Quinn Kwasniak led the way for the Patriots with 20 points and Carter Armstrong finished with 16.
