Cleveland– The Cleveland Guardians defeated a Los Angeles Dodgers team that has been dominant in the month of August, 8-3 on Tuesday night at Progressive Field.

Noah Syndergaard, who was facing his old team, pitched 6 innings, giving up three earned runs and most importantly keeping the Guardians in the game.

Syndergaard left the game at the end of the sixth inning with the Dodgers leading 3-2.

“I think by his own admission, it’s kind of a work in progress,” said Guardians Manager, Terry Francona. “He (Syndergaard) kept them off (the) scoreboard. He gave up two early and then kind of did okay, changed speeds and you know they stole some bases and they hit the two run home runs, but he kept it manageable.”

The Guardians took the lead in the bottom of the seventh and then the bullpen shut the door in the eighth and ninth inning.

The Guardians offense got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning after the Dodgers had taken a 3-0 early lead.

The Guardians scored in the fourth when Oscar Gonzalez hit a home run over the right field fence and Gabriel Arias drove in a run.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Steven Kwan drove in a run with a line drive single to center field.

“I thought we have been hitting the ball hard, just right at people (lately),” said Kwan. “Today (the hits) found holes.  You known, that’s baseball, thankfully.”

Jose Ramirez then put the Guardians ahead 4-3 with an RBI single. Still in the bottom of the seventh, Kole Calhoun, a former Dodger, hit a 3-run home run to give the Guardians a 7-3 lead.

The Guardians added a final run in the bottom of the eighth when Myles Straw singled to drive in a run.

For the game, the Guardians were led offensively by Will Brennan who was 3-4 and Andres Gimenez who was 2-4.

The Guardians bullpen was excellent in this victory over a challenging Los Angeles Dodgers lineup.

Sam Hentges picked up the victory as he pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

Trevor Stephan threw a scoreless eighth while Emmanuel Clase closed out the game by throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

The Guardians and Dodgers are back on the diamond tonight at Progressive Field at 7:10pm for the second game of their three game series.
