50/50 – Captains Split Double Header with Lugnuts

Back-to-back rain delays on Friday and Saturday led to a double header between the Lake County Captains and Lansing Lugnuts Sunday afternoon.

Pitching was a key factor in game one with the Lugnuts and Captains combining for 23 strikeouts over 9 innings

Game One

The Captains got on the board first in game one to kick off the double header. Facing two outs in the bottom of the 3rd, Joe Lampe drew a walk and followed it up with a stolen base to put the center fielder in scoring position with Jorge Burgos heading to the plate. The aggressiveness from Lampe paid off when Burgos hit a grounder into right field to drive Lampe home and give the Captains their first run to take a 1-0 lead

It wouldn’t be long before the Lugnuts would answer back. Lansing’s Lazaro Armenteros, entering the game hitting .310, took the plate in the fifth inning and hit a rocket into center field, his fourth of the season, to tie the game 1-1

Unable to break the tie in regulation, this one headed to extra innings. The Lugnuts scored in the top of the 9th thanks to a sacrifice fly from Joshwan Wright that brought Danny Bautista home, who started the inning on second base due to the extra innings rule.

The Captains were unable to mount a comeback as three straight out finished this one off with a 2-1 Lugnuts victory to take the first game in the double header

Game Two

Pitching was once again impressive in game two with both teams combining for 18 strikeouts through 7 innings

After recording four hits in game one, the Captains bats were a little more active in game two with seven, including doubles from Joe Donovan, Isaiah Greene, and Dayan Frias.

The Captains got to work early. Juan Brito lead off the bottom of the 1st with a single to right field. A pair of strikeouts brought Joe Donovan to the plate. On his second pitch, Donovan connected with a liner to left field for an RBI double to put the Captains up 1-0

A pitching clinic dominated the next five innings with neither team able to get much working. Things started to swing back in the Captains favor in the bottom of the 6th inning.

Isaiah Greene kicked things off with a double. A wild pitch from the Lugnuts’ pitcher Luke Anderson advanced Greene to third, threatening to score. Fortunately for Greene, he wouldn’t have to wait long when, two batters later, Dayan Frias hit a double of his own to bring Greene home.

Frias, eager to cross the plate as well, successfully stole third thanks to a throwing error by Lansing’s second baseman Sahid Valenzuela. One batter later would see Frias score when Cesar Idrogo hit a soft single to left field to increase the Captains lead 3-0

Similar to the Captains in the first game, the Lugnuts took the plate for one final rally but came up short and closed the game out with three straight outs to drop game two

Originally scheduled for a six-game series that ended up being cut short due to inclement weather, the Captains finished 4-1 in their home stand against the Lugnuts. The sixth game will be made up at a future date to be determined

The Captains head to Dayton on Tuesday, April 25th to begin a six game road series against the Dragons. The Captains are currently 2-1 against the Dragons this season

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm
