Indians Catcher Chris Gimenez Elects Free Agency Over Minor League Assignment

Chris Gimenez will not take an outright assignment to Triple-A Columbus for the Indians, and instead will become a free agent, this according to a tweet from MLB.com’s Jordan Basitan.

Gimenez has had three different stints with the Indians, in 2009-10, 2014 and this past season. He came to the team in May after Roberto Perez had surgery on his thumb, and hit .216 in 155 at-bats.

As Basitan stated, the Tribe does have interest in bringing him back on a minor league deal, but it will be up to the 34-year-old on if he will come back to the AL Champs or try and find a better deal elsewhere.
