Glenville Outlasts John Hay in Double OT, 80-75

Glenville edged John Hay, 80-75 in double overtime on Wednesday night.

The Tarblooders employed their full court press from the start of the game and jumped out to a 37-27 lead heading into the half.

A different John Hay team showed up for the second half, re-energized and motivated. Little by little, John Hay cut into the lead, getting it to a two-point game by the end of the third quarter.

It was an intense fourth period and John Hay kept momentum on its side, getting up to a five-point lead with just under three minutes remaining.

Glenville rallied back in the closing minutes, tying the game and sending it to OT.

The Tarblooders had a chance to end it at the free throw line after both teams traded baskets for most of the four minute OT.

Glenville could not capitalize at the line, sending the game to a second overtime.

Eventually, Glenville was able to wear down the Hornets and hit clutch free throws down the stretch to prevail 80-75.

Aaron Loines led Glenville with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Nelson Wheatley scored 14 to go with five boards and four assists.

Daylen Solomon scored a game-high 24 for John Hay in the loss.

Glenville (16-3, 12-0) remains unbeaten in Senate League play and has a tough non-conference game coming up on Feb. 11 at Mentor. Before that, the Tarblooders face East Tech in the city championship on Friday night.

John Hay (10-6, 9-3) sits in fourth place in the competitive conference and travels to Andrews Osborne Academy on Feb. 4.
