Ellet Wins Big At Lutheran East 41-6

Story by Alexa Michelle Schwerha

The game was off to a quick start for the Lutheran East High School Falcons on Saturday afternoon, with Lutheran senior captain Ivan Percy Jr. taking early flight for a 77-yard touchdown two minutes and twenty-nine seconds into the first quarter.

The play was sprung after an offensive fumble by Ellet, and promptly recovered by Lutheran junior captain Andre Parker. The attempted conversion was no good, giving the Falcon’s an early 6-0 lead over the Ellet Orangemen.

However, the Orangemen would soon regain their composure following an interception made by sophomore Heath Longville, switching possession of the ball to put Ellet back on the offensive drive. The Falcons held on, denying advancement and holding play at the 13-yard line to force a punt on the fourth down.

This drive would continue, with the pressure of the Falcon defense never relenting as moments later the Orangemen would suffer a 10-yard loss after Percy Jr. broke through the defensive line to sack the Ellet quarterback. Ellet responded quickly, with an 84-yard play beginning off a pass made by junior Josh Merring, received and carried to the 1-yard line by senior wide-receiver Trevor Pittman. This would put the Orangemen in position for a touchdown made with 58.8 seconds left in the first quarter by Merring, the extra point was good to advance the score 7-6 in favor of the visiting team.

With play tossed back and forth between the opposing teams throughout the second quarter, action waited until 3:29 left in play with the Orangemen hitting their stride and scoring a 24-yard touchdown off an interception caught by senior Christian Whack. The extra point, taken by senior Isaiah Bostick, was good, raising the score to 14-6. Minutes later, the Orangemen held the Falcons, successful in forcing a punt and fair catch at the 48-yard line.

This energy of attack would continue to heighten as the Orangemen marched to the 26-yard line, spiking the ball on 1st and 10 to stop the clock with only 0.9 seconds left in first half of play. Menning launched the 26-yard pass that was received by sophomore Ethan Jones, the extra point increasing the gap to a 21-6 lead.

Ellet remained relentless, dominating the second half with a forced turnover following an intercepted passing attempt made by Lutheran East. Now in control of possession, the offense acted quickly with a touchdown in the third quarter, Ethan Jones finding the endzone early with 9:16 ticking on the clock. The drive wouldn’t stop, another seven points added to the score off a pass by Merring received by senior Tramaine Bailey with 1:38 remaining.

The Orangemen hunger returned once more to the endzone with 6:10 remaining in fourth quarter play with senior Samarius Isom finessing his way past the goal line to top off the afternoon battle. Opportunity was taken advantage of in this half, with 20 unanswered points being delivered to end the game on a 41-6 victory for the visiting Ellet Orangemen.

The win put Akron Ellet to an overall record of 5-1. Lutheran East stands at 2-4.

Ellet takes the field Friday, October 5, on their home field against Barberton with a 7:00pm kickoff. Lutheran East takes on Akron North on Saturday, October 6, on their home turf at noon for their homecoming matchup.

Player of the Game: Josh Merring of Ellet was calm and collected as he led the Orangemen with 191 yards passing (10-14) in addition to his 1 TD.
